OLYMPIA, Wash. —
Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire said Tuesday that Republicans in the state Senate have provided her with "a very comprehensive list of ideas" for balancing the state budget. The Governors office said she received the list late Monday.
Editor's note: The governor's office told us Monday afternoon that Gregoire hadn't received any ideas.
The Governor has asked all four legislative leaders for a list of ideas, and said she expects to receive at least two more this week. At a news conference Tuesday, the Governor said she will meet with legislative leaders on Wednesday to go over ideas and discuss a possible special session. The governor had asked state lawmakers to provide her with ideas for closing the state's budget gap by Monday; House Republicans and Democrats in both the House and Senate missed that deadline.
The state is facing a shortfall of $1.14 billion.
Gregoire has already proposed cutting several programs to help close the gap:
The state's basic health plan.
The Children's Health Program.
The Disability Lifeline Unemployable cash grant.
Funding for K-12 gifted students.
She's also suggested that the state reduce funds to community colleges and four-year schools like the University of Washington and Washington State University.
Gregoire wanted ideas from legislators by today so she could notify employees affected by potential cuts and work toward balancing the budget which expires in June, KIRO 7's Essex Porter reported.
Republican leaders wrote Gregoire earlier this month to suggest a one-day special session of the Legislature in December to deal with the state's budget issues.
It's unclear if such a session will take place, but more news may be available later in the week, Porter said.
