Vandals Tear Torch Off Alki Statue Of Liberty

SEATTLE —

Vandals tore the torch off of the Statue of Liberty on Alki Beach in West Seattle.

Torch Torn From Alki Statue Of Liberty

The owner of the Liberty Deli found the torch in the tideflats during low tide.

"I jumped off the wall there and ran down and picked it up out of the water and brought it up before the tide came in," said Tom Ansart.

In 1996, someone tore the whole arm off. It was later found and reattached, at a cost of more $6,000.

Alki-area residents vow to raise money to repair the statue again.
