LACEY, Wash. —
Volunteers will cover hundreds of miles Wednesday searching for Sky Metalwala.
The 2-year-old boy has been missing since early last month, when his mother, Julia Biryukova, told police he vanished from her stalled car.
Volunteers met at Hawk's Prairie Restaurant in Lacey before setting out on a long day of handing out more flyers for the Redmond boy.
The new wave of effort this week was organized by Sky's father, Solomon Metalwala.
Metalwala has enlisted help from a group called Search and Seek, a local volunteer organization that helps find missing children. They're plastering gas stations and rest areas with flyers from Seattle to Portland.
Also helping is the Gargoyles motorcycle group, with the mission of helping children.
Volunteers were in Gresham, Ore., on Monday night passing out and posting flyers, in hopes of jogging someone's memory.
There have been few leads in the case since Bellevue police detectives went through more than 1,000 calls and tips following Sky's disappearance.
Volunteers are hoping the flyers will bring in new tips.
“I do this because I’m a mom. And if it was my kids, I’d hope someone would do the same thing for me. I’ve done it for a couple other missing kids as well, and it’s kind of struck a place in my heart I can’t get away from now,” said volunteer Amy Walcott.
Volunteers said the timing of the new effort is important because with more people hitting the road for the holidays, they'll be able to get Sky's picture and story into the hands of more people.
This week they'll cover freeway exits from the Canadian border to Portland and beyond.
KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Dubois asked Metalwala, besides having Sky back home for the holidays, if he had a specific Christmas wish.
"Julia and her friends: speak the truth. Whatever it is, let authorities know so they can do their work," he said.
