Washington To Place Ban On Synthetic Marijuana In January

OLYMPIA, Washington —

Washington's Board of Pharmacy has announced its plan to place an emergency ban on synthetic marijuana products, the board announced in a news release on Thursday.

Synthetic marijuana is sold under several product names, such as K2, Spice and Black Mamba, according to the board's release. The chemicals in the products are often sprayed on incense and users typically smoke the products in ways similar to smoking marijuana, the board said.

The board said it plans to file the rules in January.

The products can affect a person's behavior, judgment, physical coordination and overall health.

Earlier this month, a man who lost control of his car and injured three pedestrians at the Pike Place Market admitted to police that he had smoked synthetic marijuana before driving.

The board's emergency ruling mirrors the federal Drug Enforcement Agency's rules banning synthetic marijuana, which went into effect on Friday, the board said.

The board said that the state ban "is a more effective tool" for law enforcement agencies than the federal ban.
