MOUNT VERNON, Wash. —

A Whatcom County man will spend the next 23 years in prison for fatally shooting a Ferndale High School track coach.

Kenneth McBride admitted to killing coach Jeremy Scully in 2008 when he became jealous of Scully’s relationship with his wife. Scully, McBride and McBride's wife were involved in a love triangle that took a tragic turn.

Scully’s family on Friday got their chance to speak face-to-face with McBride in a Whatcom County courtroom.

"My son is dead, and I cannot forgive you," Scully’s mother said in court, her hands trembling as she spoke to McBride. "You lured him up a hill and when he wasn't looking you shot him in the back of the head. You expected to get away with it."

McBride's attorney said his client is remorseful and regrets what happened. McBride did not address the court.

He's expected to head for prison next Tuesday.
