The scuffle broke out at Sequim High School as players were congratulating each other after the game between Sequim and Gig Harbor's Peninsula High School.

Witnesses said the father of one of the Peninsula players was upset about Peninsula's loss, screamed at the Peninsula coach and started punching him.

An assistant Peninsula coach allegedly stepped in and hit the parent.

But the parent who threw the first punch, Rick Rae, told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News he was defending himself.

"The whole thing is regretful. It really is," he said. "He pushed me. I just hit him."

Sequim Police are now investigating the incident as a gross misdemeanor or simple assault. Then it will be up to the Clallam County prosecutors to determine whether to bring criminal charges.
