Snohomish County On Track For NASCAR

EVERETT, Wash. —

The Snohomish County executive says an 850-acre site near Marysville has been selected as the preferred location for a NASCAR race track in the Northwest.

Survey: Support NASCAR Racetrack? Do you support building a NASCAR racetrack near Marysville? Yes. No. Not sure.

County Executive Aaron Reardon and the mayors of Marysville and Arlington are making the announcement at a news conference in Everett.

The International Speedway Corporation has been looking for a possible race track site near Puget Sound -- in Snohomish, Kitsap or Thurston counties -- as well as the Portland, Oregon, area.

The Florida company owns or operates 12 major tracks in the country.

The track proposal has already drawn the opposition of some neighbors who organized the group "Snohomish County Citizens Against a Racetrack," or SCAR, complaining about new traffic congestion. Bit supporters have formed Fans United for NASCAR, or FUN, thinking it would bring jobs and be good for the county.

The $300 million dollar track would be built on farmland. It would seat to 75,000 spectators for one major racing event a year and two or three minor races. The first race would be in 2008.

NASCAR expects to draw fans from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Portland.
