State Rep.: Missing Sonics Costing State $100M Per Year

SEATTLE —

State Rep. Mike Hope (R, Lake Stevens) says the loss of the Seattle Supersonics is costing the state more than $100 million per year.

Hope was part of a group of legislators who want the NBA to reburn to the state. The group met for the first time this week.

The Puget Sound Business Journal reports that the group wants to see if a new arena to accommodate both basketball and hockey is economically feasible.

KIRO 7's Chris Egert broke the news earlier this month that Chicago businessman Don Levin is in active talks to bring an NHL stadium that could also support an NBA team to the Eastside.

Hope says the problem is finding money to pay for a new stadium, since most people don't want to spend tax dollars on such a project.
