SEATTLE —

A winter storm warning is in effect as another frontal system hits Western Washington with the potential for several inches of snow in the Hood Canal area.

Up to 8 inches of snow could accumulate in the Hood Canal area, and there could be 1 to 3 inches of snow in the Shelton area overnight.

"I don't think we'll get a lot of accumulation in the central Puget Sound," said KIRO 7 Chief Meteorologist Rebecca Stevenson. "But if you head farther south, into Olympia -- if you head into the Cascade foothills or even into the Willapa Hills towards Elma or the slopes of the Olympics -- that's where we're going to have our snow showers."

Most of the region will see gusty winds and rain.

Wind gusts will build up to 40 to 50 mph on the coast and in the north, Stevenson said.

Forecasters expect 6 to 9 inches snow in the Cascades Tuesday night.

Forecasters also expect 1 to 4 inches of snow in much of Eastern Washington through early Wednesday from the east slopes of the Cascades through valleys, as moist air collides with entrenched cold air.
