SEATTLE —

As Western Washington temperatures threatened to hit some of the hottest readings of the summer, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency issued its first Smog Watch of the season.

The Smog Watch, effective until July 31, comes as pollution levels were expected to enter the "moderate" range throughout much of the Puget Sound region Monday and stay there through Thursday.

Ozone pollution levels would likely reach the "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" range on Tuesday and Wednesday in many areas east and south of Seattle and Tacoma, particularly in the Cascade foothills, the agency said.

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency recommends people do the following to reduce ozone pollution:

--Reduce driving by combining trips, carpooling, using public transportation, and deferring errands --Avoid using gasoline-powered yard equipment --Refuel your automobile in the evening hours

Cooler marine air was expected to move onshore Wednesday and Thursday, bringing morning clouds, afternoon sun and seasonable temperatures.
