Snow Hits Some Lowland Areas, Piles Up In Mountains

SEATTLE —

Snow fell in some parts of lowland Western Washington but the widespread snow that was expected overnight fell -- for the most part -- as rain, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

New snow fell in Whatcom County, the Shelton and Olympia areas, and other parts of the region.

In the Cascades, a heavy snow warning is in effect until Wednesday morning. Another foot or two of snow is possible, forecasters said.

An avalanche, avalanche danger and a jackknifed semi-trailer closed Interstate 90 at Snoqualmie Pass Tuesday morning. I-90 was closed in both directions from milepost 47 eastbound to milepost 80 westbound. There was no immediate word on when the freeway would reopen.

An inch or two of snow fell in Shelton, said KIRO 7 Eyewitness News South Sound reporter Richard Thompson.

Thompson said an inch or two fell in Grays Harbor County, but he saw only "lots of cold rain" in Pierce and Thurston counties Tuesday morning.

In Snohomish County, snow flurries turned to rain and some residential streets are a "slushy mess," said KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Alison Ahmoye. Arterials are bare and wet, she said.

Forecasters said rain showers are likely to continue this week in Western Washington with snow at higher elevations, the mountains and in Eastern Washington.
