Hit-and-mix system brings squalls of snow, wintry mix

SEATTLE —

Snow or a snow-rain mix fell in many parts of Western Washington, with areas at the base of the Olympic Mountains receiving the most activity.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Rick Price was in Hoodsport and Potlatch, where several inches of snow had accumulated but most roads were bare and wet.  Hood Canal had enough snow to delay schools for two hours.

Areas of the North Sound such as Everett received a dusting early Wednesday, but later more fell in Lynnwood, visibly coating cars and streets.

In the South Sound, snow-rain or very wet snow showers were widespread, moving across Olympia, Gig Harbor and Tacoma.  Snow was falling hard at times in west Olympia, with strong winds sometimes blowing the snow sideways.

KIRO 7 meteorologist Sam Argier said slushy snow accumulations were possible in Aberdeen, Elma and Montesano.

He said conditions would be ever-changing throughout the day, with a system over Hood Canal moving east to Seattle and temperatures staying just above the freezing mark.

An area of low pressure spinning over Western Washington wrapping in cold, moist air will keep scattered showers in the forecast during the day with mainly rain this afternoon.  Any heavy showers could have snow, ice pellets or hail mixed in.

Any accumulations would be minor, less than an inch.  The coast and South Sound may hear sounds of thunder later Wednesday.

Argier said there was a possibility for similar snow-rain activity early Thursday morning.

Heavier snow is falling in the Cascades, and forecasters say nearly all of Eastern Washington will have accumulations Wednesday of 1 inch in the south to 5 inches in the north.   A winter storm warning is in effect until noon for the Spokane area, where about 2 inches are expected.

Forecasters expect the storm will add about 6 inches of snow in the Cascades with maybe 6 inches more over Mount Rainier.

The Weather Service says the chance of snow showers will remain in the forecast for Eastern Washington through the weekend while the precipitation will fall mostly as rain in Western Washington into next week.
