Storm Brings Some Flooding, First Significant Mountain Snow

A storm packing heavy rain triggered flood alerts Monday and was expected to bring up to a foot of snow through Tuesday to the Cascades, the first significant snowfall of the season.

Six to 12 inches of snow through Tuesday morning will fall, with heavier amounts possible north of Snoqualmie Pass and the possibility of accumulations in some spots near Stevens Pass of up to 18 inches, said Chief Meteorologist Rebecca Stevenson.

"The heaviest amounts initially (Monday) evening above 4,000 feet, but overnight (Monday night), those snow showers dipping down and may affect Snoqualmie Pass as well," Stevenson said.

The snow level should drop to about 2,500 feet, she said.

The heavy rain that passed through the area on Monday swelled some rivers to flood stage.

A flood warning was in effect Monday afternoon for the Snoqualmie River at Snoqualmie Falls, but was canceled shortly before 6 p.m. The Snoqualmie River at Carnation was also at risk of flooding, the weather service said.

The river is expected to crest at about 5 p.m., flooding pasture lands and roads from Snoqualmie through Fall City. Map of closed roads

An earlier flood warning for the Tolt River near Carnation was canceled.
