Western Washington braces for another round of cold, snow for some

Snow was falling steadily Tuesday afternoon near Hoodsport.

KENT, Washington —

Western Washington’s recent cold snap has caused a run on supplies at McLendon Hardware on Kent’s East Hill, and Tuesday, more cold -- and snow for some -- was back in the forecast.

McLendon Hardware in Kent had a pallet full of firewood Tuesday morning, but it was reduced to just a few bundles by the afternoon.

“They’re picking up firewood, kerosene, any kind of fuel to heat their houses just in case we lose power this round of the storms,” service manager Tony Barnes said.

KIRO 7 Chief Meteorologist Rebecca Stevenson said the central Puget Sound wasn’t likely to get any snow accumulations, but forecast highs are in the low 40s for Wednesday, and a winter storm warning is in effect for most of the region.

Just a month ago, snow and ice coated trees and brought some down, leaving hundreds of people in the area in the dark. It meant brisk business at McLendon.

However, “there’re still people cleaning up after that storm,” Barnes said. “Still, people are coming in cutting, cutting all the trees that fell down. Yeah, it’s devastating.”

Heat needed, but prices up

Louise Roumagoux came into McLendon on Tuesday looking for heat.

“It’s pretty cold,” she said. “It’s below 50. In the morning, it’s really cold.”

By Tuesday morning, the house she’s staying in, in Seattle’s Phinney Ridge neighborhood, had run out of heating oil completely. She said she decided she needed more oil because the homeowner won’t be back till Wednesday night.

“By the time she’d call (for more oil), it would be Friday, so we would be living in a really frigid environment for like five days,” Roumagoux said. “Too cold. Too long.”

She will end up paying more. Since the Cherry Point Refinery fire near Blaine a week and a half ago, the cost of furnace oil is up 20 cents per gallon.

Steady snow near Hoodsport

Snow wasn't sticking Tuesday afternoon in Hoodsport, even though it was about 32 degrees, but closer to Lake Cushman, near 800 feet in elevation, the world looked much whiter.

"Well, there's about an inch-and-a-half on the ground right now, but my wife gets off work at five, and I've got to have it clean for her," said Dunnie Hanks as he plowed snow from his driveway. "Mountain living at 800 feet."

Outside the Girls Cafe, Beverly Gilton was hoping the forecast of up to several inches of snow was wrong, but she wasn't taking any chances.

"I heard and went to the bank so I didn't have to go down the hill," she said. "I hurried because I don't like the hill when it starts sticking."

Adam Boen said he was in the middle of a demolition project at home. His pickup and trailer were filled with debris he was taking to the dump, and he said he wasn't going to be sidetracked by the snow.

"I'm fixing up my house and the weather -- I'm not going to let the weather stop me," he said. "I've got tot take advantage of my time, so lots of work going on."
