LACEY, Wash. -- A story on KIROTV.com leads Lacey police to identify the man who officials say raped a woman near St. Martin’s University in April, said KIRO 7 reporter Richard Thompson.Lacey detectives said Richard Duane Bunch, who is already in jail on other rape charges, is also the person who sexually assaulted a St. Martin’s University student as she walked alone on a trail.Bunch was arrested in August as reported in the KIROTV.com story Trucker Charged With Rape May Have More Victims. In that story, Lacey detectives charged 49-year-old Bunch with raping a 13-year-old Nevada girl at a park where he was traveling on his last trucking job for Pacific-based Gordon Trucking. The police then sent Bunch’s picture out to the media after fearing that Bunch could have more victims. KIRO 7 Eyewitness News posted the story along with Bunch's picture and a Lacey police officer noticed it on our Web site."A Lacey police detective was viewing the KIRO News Web site when he noticed a sexual assault arrest that was made in Pacific, Washington," said Lacey Police Chief Dusty Pierpoint. The police officer started to investigate the incident further after noticing the striking similarities, Lacey detectives said.In the St. Martin’s University rape incident, police allege Bunch used a Taser gun to shock and subdue a student who he then raped on a trail near the school.Police said the student was sexually assaulted by a man who appeared to be in his 50s as she walked alone on a trail near St. Martin’s University in Lacey.Lacey police said that because the rapist used a Taser, it leads them to believe that the incident was premeditated and he was out to target someone. An investigation found Bunch’s DNA is consistent with the DNA found in the student’s rape case. Police also found a Taser gun and the student’s iPod in Bunch’s van, detectives said.Charges have already been filed against Bunch including rape, robbery and kidnapping in connection with the rape of the St. Martin’s University student. Detectives said Bunch visited 19 states as a truck driver and they will be working with the FBI to determine if there may be other victims out there.
