Properly installed and maintained, today's average heating oil tank can last as long as 40 years.
Homeowners do not have to remove their underground tanks unless there is a leak.
In the rare event of a leak, every homeowner is covered under the PLIA fund which provides up to $60,000 for the assessment and cleanup costs associated with tank leaks. There is no fee for this coverage.
