7400 Sandpoint Way
Seattle, WA 98115
Seattle's second largest park, Magnuson Park, has a unique geographic shape and location on Sand Point that allows for a number of fun activities. The park is known for being windy, and makes an excellent location for kites and windsurfing. It's location on Lake Washington makes Magnuson Park a great place for waterspouts, and visitors from around Seattle flock to the park to enjoy its natural beauty, sports fields and courts, walking trails, playgrounds, and other captivating features.
The area now occupied by Magnuson Park was set aside in 1900, but in 1922 it was acquired by the US Navy and quickly became the site of the Naval Station Puget Sound. The naval base was shut down in 1970 and, in 1975, the city of Seattle decided to once again turn the land into a park. It now features dozens of features for the whole family, including Seattle's biggest playground (Junior League of Seattle Children's Playground), a dog park, swimming beach, sailboating, a number of sports fields, and "Kite Hill." The park also features public art projects like "The Fin Project: From Swords to Plowshares", a field of old submarine fins fixed to look like the dorsal fins of a whale pod. Also located at Magnuson Park is the "Sound Garden", an arrangement of pipes that makes ambient noise when wind blows through it (and the namesake of the infamous grunge band).
With so many activities and facilities at Magnuson Park, no wonder it's become one of the most popular parks and sources of natural beauty in all of Seattle. Come visit today, but bring a coat; it might be just a little windy.
