In addition to being a cultural mecca for Downtown Seattle, the 5th Avenue Theatre has been listed on the US National Register of Historic Places since 1978. The venue is the theatrical arm of the University of Washington and can seat up to 2,130 patrons. Known for its elaborate Chinese style, the theatre is also an architectural wonder. The facility still contains the original Chinese-style lions. Originally designed as a movie palace, the 5th Avenue Theatre went into a period of decline during the '70s as the development of suburban theaters stole the nuance of larger urban venues.
A renovation effort began in 1980 in which the historic site has been revitalized to its original stature. The 5th Avenue Theatre remain's Seattle's top venue for theatrical performances and other live cultural events. In 2011, the venue has hosted locally produced versions of Rent, Oklahoma!, and Les Miserable.
