Voter Registration Soaring In Washington

Posted: 4:46 pm PDT October 12, 2004Updated: 4:51 pm PDT October 12, 2004

With the election three weeks away, indications point to a huge turnout.

That's because local county offices are swamped with huge numbers of voters registering for the first time in Washington state.

All around the Puget Sound, there is a huge surge of new voters, raising the question: Who will they vote for?

With mail registrations no longer accepted, King County is sending election officials out to register voters in person in a "votemobile" donated by the League of Women Voters.

Misty Parton was anxious to sign up.

"I know that I might not have made it if it wasn't here, so I think it's a very good idea," Parton said.

With President Bush and Senator Kerry locked in a tight battle for the White House, voter registrations in our state are soaring.

"The last time I voted was for Gerald Ford and I just feel so strung out with Bush," said Brian Meehan.

In Pierce County, registrations are up more than 100 percent compared to the last presidential year.

Registrations are up 61 percent in Snohomish County, 37 percent in Thurston County and 15 percent in King County.

New voters may lean Democratic in Seattle, Republican elsewhere. The vote mobile will travel all over the county.

No matter where you live in Washington state, the last day to register to vote is next Monday, Oct. 18.
