Penny LeGate: A Humanitarian Safari Through East Africa

Overview

Every year since 2002, KIRO 7 Eyewitness news reporter and anchor Penny LeGate has traveled to Africa to report on various humanitarian missions sponsored primarily by Rotary, an international service organization.

Over the years, the participants have included Rotary Club members from the Seattle area as well as Hawaii, Georgia, Maine, Oregon and British Columbia.

The main objective has been to help vaccinate children against polio. But the outreach has also expanded now to include work on issues such as water, literacy, homelessness, AIDS orphans, hunger, and educational materials (books, computers, school supplies, etc).

Here is Penny's daily blog which seeks to translate vivid personal experiences into words. What follows are daily entries from the autumn 2006 trip.
