The Seattle SuperSonics have filed a demand for arbitration in hopes of a ruling that they don't have to play the final three years of their lease at KeyArena.

The ruling would allow the Sonics to relocate after this coming season if the team doesn't secure a new arena in the Seattle area by next month.

Meanwhile, Sonics principal owner Clay Bennett said the team is still discussing with the Muckleshoot Tribe the tribe's offer to provide land for a new arena for the Sonics.

He also said the Storm will play in Seattle this year.

Bennett made the announcements at a news conference Friday morning, less than two weeks after the Seattle City Council voted unanimously to require the team to fulfill the lease's terms.

Bennett previously said he hopes the team and the city can agree to an early end to the lease, which lasts until September 2010.

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels has said he expects the Sonics to fulfill the terms of the team's lease.

The group A Deal is a Deal is working to get an initiative on next February's ballot that would require the Sonics to stay in Seattle until the lease expires.

The group's leaders said keeping the Sonics in Seattle until 2010 gives the team, businesses and government leaders more time to find a way to keep the team here permanently.
