Stanford Squeaks Past Marquette In OT

POSTED: 10:30 pm PDT March 22, 2008

(Sports Network) - Brook Lopez scored 30 points, including the game-winning basket with 1.3 seconds left in overtime, as Stanford overcame the ejection of head coach Trent Johnson to pull out a thrilling 82-81 win over Marquette in a second-round game out of the South Region of the NCAA Tournament.

After calling a timeout with 9.2 seconds to play, Mitch Johnson took the inbounds pass and fed the ball to Lopez on the low block. Lopez backed down his defender and threw up a leaner that rolled around the rim and fell through the hoop for an 82-81 lead.

"It was a good look, thanks to Mitch," Lopez said. "I was on the floor looking at it, so I don't really know what to say."

Mitch Johnson stole away Marquette's inbounds attempt and dribbled out the clock as the Cardinal celebrated their dramatic victory.

"Well, obviously if they're going to play this way I think I need to stay away from the games all the time," Johnson said.

Robin Lopez added 18 points and nine rebounds for the third-seeded Cardinal (28-7), who advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2001 and will face the winner of Sunday's contest between Texas and Miami-Florida on Friday in Houston. Mitch Johnson contributed nine points and 16 assists for Stanford, which made 7-of-14 from three-point range.

"I think we also had a little extra adrenaline, because Stanford hasn't been past the second round to the next weekend for a while, and I actually haven't talked about it, but I knew that was something that I really wanted to do," Mitch Johnson said. "So there was definitely a little bit of extra adrenaline and emotion in this game."

Trent Johnson was ejected with 3:36 left in the first half when referee Curtis Shaw called him for a pair of technical fouls after the coach argued a foul call on forward Lawrence Hill. Assistant Doug Oliver took over on the Cardinal bench for the remainder of the game.

"Basically, you know, I was out of line," Trent Johnson said. "Bottom line was I was trying to fight for my kids, and there was no profanity or anything like that used, but I had been warned prior to that, and I put our team in a bad situation, and it's unacceptable."

Jerel McNeal posted a career-high 30 points and also had eight boards for the sixth-seeded Golden Eagles (25-10), who topped Kentucky in the first round. Wesley Matthews tallied 14 points, while Dominic James contributed nine and 10 assists. Dan Fitzgerald came off the bench for 11 points in defeat.

Leading by three, McNeal nailed a jumper to extend the lead to five, before Brook Lopez scored four straight points to bring the Cardinal within 69-68 with 2:25 left in regulation.

After forcing a turnover, Brook Lopez drew a foul on Ousmane Barro and hit a pair of free throws to cap a personal 6-0 run and put Stanford on top, 70-69, with 1:44 to go.

McNeal answered the call on Marquette's next possession, driving for a layup to put the Golden Eagles ahead by a point with 1:12 on the clock. After trading defensive stops, Robin Lopez was fouled underneath the basket with 8.8 ticks to play.

He missed the first free throw, and after a Marquette timeout, drained the second to force a 71-71 deadlock. McNeal's three clanged off the front of the rim in the waning seconds, and the Cardinal controlled the ball as regulation expired.

A pair of threes from McNeal had the Golden Eagles leading, 77-75, early in overtime, but Mitch Johnson drained a three from the top of the key to give Stanford a one point edge with 3:22 to go.

James went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to tie the game, then Brook Lopez muscled his way to the basket for a layup that gave the Cardinal a two-point lead with 2 1/2 minutes to play.

McNeal responded once more, draining a three for an 81-80 advantage with just over two minutes left in overtime.

"It was the type of game that we've experienced this year, time and time again," Oliver said. "We've been in close ball games; for the most part we were able to keep the game in the half court, and it was just a hell of a basketball game."

Stanford scored the game's first seven points, but the Golden Eagles charged back to tie the game at 11. The teams played traded baskets for most of the remainder of the half until, until Trent Johnson's ejection set off an 11-1 Marquette run that allowed the Golden Eagles to take a 36-30 lead at intermission.

Stanford quickly rallied after halftime, pulling to within 47-46 when Robin Lopez grabbed an offensive board and went up-and-under for a layup with a little more than five minutes gone.

McNeal's pull-up jumper stretched the lead back to three, but Anthony Goods drilled a three from the left wing to tie the game at 49, and Brook Lopez drained a pair of free throws to give the Cardinal a 51-49 lead with 13:11 to play.

Kenny Brown canned a three, then Robin Lopez made 1-of-2 at the free throw to finish off the 9-0 burst and put Stanford ahead 55-49 win 11 1/2 minutes to go.

Marquette rallied back, and took a 58-57 lead when McNeal's basket with 7:20 on the clock capped a string of seven straight Marquette points. Two free throws from Hill put the Cardinal back in front, but the Golden Eagles responded with seven more points, punctuated by Lazar Hayward's three to give Marquette a 65-59 edge with six minutes remaining.

The Cardinal answered with four straight points to pull within 65-63, but McNeal again responded, putting in a layup for a four-point margin with 4 1/2 minutes to play.
