M's Stomp Tribe Behind King Felix, Ibanez Slam

POSTED: 11:15 pm PDT July 18, 2008

(Sports Network) - Raul Ibanez hit a grand slam as part of a three-hit night and Felix Hernandez tossed six solid innings, as Seattle routed Cleveland, 8-2, in the opener of a three-game set with the Indians.

Hernandez (7-6) gave up just two runs on four hits and a pair of walks, and struck out eight to help the Mariners win their second straight. The right- hander earned his first win since June 17.

Jose Lopez added a three-run homer, while Adrian Beltre went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks.

Aaron Laffey (5-6) was touched for eight runs -- just three earned -- on nine hits in 3 2/3 frames to absorb the loss. It was Laffey's shortest outing of the season for Cleveland, which took a four-game winning streak into the All- Star break.

"Errors are going to happen. As a pitcher you've got to handle it," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "One thing Aaron's done a pretty good job of early in his career is controlling damage, but he didn't do that tonight. He made it really hard on himself."

Casey Blake hit a solo homer and drove in both runs for the Indians, while Andy Marte and Asdrubal Cabrera each had a hit and a walk.

In the bottom of the second, Miguel Cairo and Kenji Johjima's consecutive ground outs provided a bleak outlook for the inning. But Jamie Burke followed with a single, and Laffey hit Yuniesky Betancourt. Ichiro Suzuki then got on base after Jhonny Peralta's fielding error, which loaded the bases.

After Bloomquist walked to force in a run, Ibanez stepped up and slugged Laffey's offering into the right field stands to put the Mariners ahead, 5-0.

"I was looking for a good pitch to hit. I knew he was trying to get back into the count, he had just walked somebody on four straight pitches," Ibanez said. "I thought it would be a good time to look for a pitch to hit."

Blake's RBI ground out in the third got one run back for the Indians, but Seattle surged ahead again in the fourth. Bloomquist hit into a fielder's choice and Ibanez followed with a single to right. Beltre's fly out left runners on the corners with two outs for Lopez, who hammered a down-and-in pitch beyond the left field wall for an 8-1 lead.

Blake led off the sixth with an opposite field homer to right, but Hernandez got out of the inning without further damage. Mark Lowe, Roy Corcoran and Cesar Jimenez each threw a scoreless inning of relief to finish the game.

Game Notes

It was Ibanez's sixth career grand slam, and first since September 18 of last season...Prior to the game, the Mariners called up first baseman Bryan LaHair from Triple-A Tacoma. LaHair made his major league debut by pinch-hitting for Lopez in the eighth inning, and grounded into a double play...Seattle's Jarrod Washburn, who was scheduled to start Saturday's contest, has flu-like symptoms and will instead start Monday against the Red Sox. Miguel Batista will take the mound for the Mariners on Saturday against Cleveland's Jeremy Sowers.
