Villwock Crowned Chevrolet Cup Champion Amid Controversy

Posted: 3:23 pm PDT August 3, 2008Updated: 3:27 pm PDT August 5, 2008

Although officials crowned Dave Villwock the Chevrolet Cup champion after debating a penalty against Jean Theoret and the Beacon boat, the controversial win is being appealed.

The controversy capped off a day that started with David Bryant flipping his boat in the first heat, which caused that heat to be delayed and pushed the rest of the race schedule back throughout the day.

Bryant was not hurt.

In the race for the championship, Theoret and the U-37 Beacon Plumbing boat seemed to be the runaway winner until officials penalized him for being off-plane.

At the start of the final race, the boats were going very slow in an effort to not reach the starting line early. The judges ruled that during that time, Theoret allowed the nose of the boat to go into the water, and thus was ruled as being off-plane. The judges penalized Theoret one minute, which caused the second-place boat, the Ellstrom Elam Plus, to move into the first-place position and win the Chevrolet Cup.

Although the other boats were also traveling at slow speeds, the judges ruled that no one else was off-plane.

Theoret in the Miss Beacon Plumbing boat held the lead for the entire race, but it was in the first lap that the team was penalized.

The controversial penalty angered the Beacon Plumbing team and forced officials to delay announcing the race results.

The American Boat Racing Association will rule on the team's appeal in the next week or so.

The U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto team with driver Steve David finished in second place.

Jeff Bernard and the U-5 FormulaBoats.com boat placed in third and the U-17 Our Gang Racing boat driven by Kip Brown placed fourth.

Theoret and the Beacon Plumbing boat ended up in fifth place and Gregg Hopp with Mirageboats.com came in sixth.

J. Michael Kelly with the U-13 Graham Trucking boat did not finish.
