Red-Hot Angels Go For Sixth Straight In Finale With Mariners

(Sports Network) -The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are going to try and make their short series with Seattle a good one. The club concludes a two-game set with the Mariners tonight at Angel Stadium.

Tonight's test brings to a close an eight-game homestand for the Angels, who are 6-1 on the trip and 37-22 as the host this year. The club is a major- league best 75-43 on the season.

Ervin Santana draws the starting assignment tonight for Los Angeles and has won back-to-back starts after dropping two straight. He defeated the Yankees on August 1 with eight shutout innings and returned five days later to top Baltimore. The right-hander gave up four runs on eight hits over seven frames versus the Orioles.

Santana is 13-5 with a 3.45 earned run average this year and has won both of his starts versus the Mariners in 2008, allowing only three runs in 15 2/3 total innings. In nine career starts against Seattle, the 25-year-old is 5-2 with a 4.56 ERA.

He faces stiff competition tonight from Seattle's Felix Hernandez. The 22- year-old phenom got a no-decision last time out -- his eighth of the year -- after giving up just a run on four hits and three walks over eight innings against American League East-leading Tampa Bay.

Despite a 2.94 ERA this year, Hernandez is just 7-7 and has struck out 132 over 144 innings. He has a 2.47 ERA in nine road starts this year.

The right-hander is 3-4 with two complete games and a 4.79 ERA in nine career starts against the Angels. He defeated them on April 11, allowing four runs and nine hits over 6 2/3 innings.

The Angels improved to 7-3 versus the Mariners this year and 20-9 in the series since the start of last season with a 7-3 victory on Tuesday.

Garret Anderson hit a two-run home run to extend his hitting streak to 17 games and Vladimir Guerrero added a two-run homer for the Angels, who have won five straight and 20 of their last 25 games. Juan Rivera chipped in a solo blast and finished with two RBI, while Mark Teixeira also knocked in a run in the win.

Anderson is hitting .400 (28-for-70) with four homers and 18 RBI over his hitting streak. He is a career .350 hitter (7-for-20) with a homer and five RBI against Hernandez, but just 4-for-40 in nine games against Seattle this year.

Francisco Rodriguez posted his major-league best 46th save last night, leaving him just one short of his own club record set in 2006.

Raul Ibanez went 2-for-5, drove in a run and scored once for the Mariners, who have dropped five of their last six contests. Ichiro Suzuki went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 17 games in defeat, while Adrian Beltre and Jose Lopez each drove in a run for Seattle.

Suzuki is hitting .395 (30-for-76) with one homer, nine RBI and 13 runs scored over his hitting streak. He is a lifetime .311 hitter against Los Angeles, but just 11-for-44 (.250) in 10 games this season.

The All-Star outfielder is 6-for-25 (.240) with two triples in his career against Santana.
