'Emotional Attachment' To Seattle Making Griffey's Decision Difficult

Posted: 8:20 am PST February 18, 2009Updated: 2:08 pm PST February 18, 2009

Amid a swirl of rumors and denied reports Tuesday that he would play for the Braves, former Seattle Mariner Ken Griffey Jr. has yet to announce his decision of whether he will play for Seattle or Atlanta.

Chuck Dowdle, who is sports director at KIRO's sister station in Atlanta, WSB-TV, said that during a conversation with Braves general manager Frank Wren, Wren said Griffey's decision was difficult because of the player's "emotional attachment to Seattle."

Wren said the Braves do not have a deal with the outfielder.

"He is still contemplating our offer," Wren told Dowdle.

On Tuesday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Griffey had decided to play for Atlanta, but the Major League Baseball Web site, MLB.com, said Griffey denied that he had made a decision.

The Mariners have declined to discuss their efforts to bring Griffey back to the original team in which he played his first 11 seasons.

When Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu was asked about Griffey on Tuesday at the team's spring training complex in Peoria, Ariz., he cupped his ear and jokingly pretended he couldn't hear.

"What? What was that?" Wakamatsu said.

The rest of the Mariners -- and Braves -- have been left waiting and Wondering what Griffey's decision will be. The first full-team workouts for both Seattle and Atlanta were Wednesday.

Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik, a fixture by the fields in the first three days of camp, was not seen Tuesday. After saying back in December that he was pursuing Griffey, the new GM has been silent on the topic.

Griffey asked for a trade out of Seattle in 1999. The Mariners eventually sent him to Cincinnati before the 2000 season.
