Schmidt, Zaun File For Free Agency

Posted: 2:21 pm PST November 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - Pitcher Jason Schmidt and catcher Gregg Zaun were the only two players to file for free agency Wednesday, bringing the total who have filed to 156.

Schmidt, 36, reached the end of a three-year deal he signed with the Dodgers prior to the 2007 season. However, he made just 10 starts over the course of the contract, as he underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in June 2007, then missed all of 2008.

He returned to the mound this past July and made four starts, going 2-2 with a 5.60 earned run average, but went back to the disabled list in August with a right shoulder issue, and missed the rest of the season.

In 14 seasons with Atlanta, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Los Angeles, Schmidt has compiled a 130-96 record with a 3.96 ERA in 323 games -- 314 starts.

Zaun, 38, split last season between Baltimore and Tampa Bay, and posted a .260 average with eight home runs and 27 RBI in 90 total contests. Zaun is a veteran of 15 major league seasons, having played for Baltimore, Florida, Texas, Kansas City, Houston, Colorado and Toronto, in addition to the Rays.

In 1,204 career games, Zaun owns a .251 average and .344 on-base percentage, with 86 homers and 432 RBI.
