Seattle's Soriano Stable After Head Injury

Posted: 1:12 pm PDT August 30, 2006

(Sports Network) - Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Rafael Soriano is in stable condition Wednesday after he left Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim with a head injury.

Mariners team physician Dr. Edward Khalfayan examined the Mariners pitcher Wednesday morning at Harborview Medical Center and a follow-up CT scan showed "no worsening of his condition."

He was then examined by neurosurgeon Dr. Rich Ellenbogen, will receive some physical therapy and could be released as early as later today. He will continue to receive therapy for a concussion and be re-examined in two weeks.

Soriano took the mound for the start of the eighth inning and struck out leadoff batter Orlando Cabrera. The next batter was Vladimir Guerrero, who ripped a line drive that hit Soriano behind his right ear. The ball hit Soriano with such force that it caromed all the way back to the wall near the dugout.

"It's a terrible thing," said Guerrero. "As soon as I turned I saw him hit the ground, and all I could do was pray for him and his family."

Soriano fell to the ground immediately and rolled around in pain. Moments later, the game was stopped and the medical staff surrounded him. After a 10- minute delay, Soriano was lifted onto a stretcher and carted off the field before an ambulance took him to Harborview Hospital, which is near Safeco Field.

Entering Tuesday's game, the 26-year-old Soriano owned a 1-2 record with a 2.11 earned run average and two saves. He has served as the top setup man in the Seattle bullpen for the majority of the 2006 season.
