KIRO-TV Internship Program
Internship Requirements1. The student must be registered at a University, College, Community College or Vocational-Technical Institute.2. The student should have junior or senior status, or be in the last year of a Community College or Vocational-Technical program.3. The student must be sponsored by a faculty advisor and/or internship coordinator. Written confirmation must be provided by the university/college confirming that a minimum of one credit hour will be earned for participation in the program. No compensation will be received from the station.4. All internships require a minimum of 15 hours per week covering a period of 10-16 weeks, depending on the school's quarter or semester length.5. While KIRO-TV considers the internship program format valuable in observing the student's attitude, talents, and skills, it is understood that no guarantees are given for future employment.

Work with website producers in updating news content and entertainment databases, developing special event online packages, researching content for specialized guides and preparing e-mail newsletters.Internship candidates should have excellent communication skills, accurate data entry and typing skills and familiarity and experience with researching information on the Web. Must learn quickly and follow directions with minimal supervision. Familiarity with HTML helpful.
Programming and Research
Monday-Friday 10-20 hours per week

This internship is designed for students interested in TV Programming and Broadcast Research. The intern will develop specific knowledge of broadcast programming, including developing program schedules, responding to viewer requests, and helping to clear programs as a CBS affiliate. Intern will also assist in development of reports and sales pieces using market research data. Internship provides introduction to Nielsen ratings and other media research. It also provides an opportunity to work with all departments and gain an understanding of television station systems. Intern should have good communication skills and basic computer literacy, including Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
Production Department Internship

Production Department Internship. This internship is for students who want to immerse themselves in studio and field production. The intern will assist the production and local programming departments with daily productions and preparation for Seafair events. Duties will include: research, tape logging, basic editing, placing phone calls, letter writing, errand running and assisting the production staff with special needs as they arise. Should have knowledge of studio production and/or field production, basic computer skills and the ability to learn assignments quickly.
TV Sales

This internship is for students interested in sales, advertising, communications, marketing and/or promotions. The focus will be on growing existing business and building new business opportunities. The intern will receive hands-on experience with general operations of television sales, website marketing, promotions, traffic, research, ratings, and special projects while helping facilitate client service activities in the sales department. Specific functions may include: creating & updating sales proposals and client recaps; assisting with the implementation of kirotv.com and seattleinsider.com contests and promotions; maintaining KIRO sales calendar; creating & tracking kirotv.com advertiser reports; participating in sales calls and client presentations; creating prospecting lists for special advertising initiatives and projects; assisting Sales Managers with special projects and set-up of training sessions; and attending sales meetings, training sessions, business development brainstorms and additional sales events as they occur. Candidates should be proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Community Relations

This internship is for students interested in Community Relations and Event Production. Intern will help coordinate community events, activities and special projects and supervise on-site booths. The intern will also learn specific knowledge of public affairs programming, including developing and writing weekly community calendars, reviewing and scheduling public service announcements, attending monthly ascertainment meetings and responding to viewer requests and inquiries. This internship provides an opportunity to work with the newsroom and experience the general systems involved in running a television station. Intern should have basic computer literacy, preferably WordPerfect, excellent communication skills when dealing with the public and writing experience.
Local Programming

This internship is for students who are interested in Local Programming. Local Programming encompasses commercials, public affairs spots, and television programs. Intern will assist producers with the production of commercials, public affairs announcements, and local television programs. Candidate should have good writing skills, computer experience, and a positive attitude. Intern should be interested in producing, researching, and writing.
KIRO 7 Eyewitness News

This internship is designed for students interested in the behind the scenes workings of a TV news program - ideal for students desiring to become a news writer or producer. Interns will assist the producers in researching stories and assisting with show scripts. Interns will also have the opportunities to accompany KIRO News crews in the field on occasion.
TV News Assignment Desk

KIRO-This internship is designed for students who are interested in becoming an assignment editor, producer or reporter. It provides experience in handling coverage logistics, finding and setting up stories, making "beat " calls, and chasing developing news.
TV News Operations

This internship is designed for students interested in remote broadcast for TV news and other related aspects of TV news operations. Interns will assist technical staff in establishing news remotes using both terrestrial microwave and satellite systems and assisting with associated logistics. This position involves extensive field work and some physical demands related with the set-up of equipment. Students must have sound judgment and quick-thinking abilities. Knowledge of basic electronics is helpful.
TV News Photojournalism

This internship is designed for students interested in TV News photojournalism. Students will learn shooting techniques, journalism, equipment handling, and respect for the profession. Intern will accompany news photojournalists in the field and assist the photojournalists and editor in the editing room. Students must have sound judgment, quick-thinking abilities and an interest in current news stories.
Sports

This internship is aimed at students interested in a career in sports broadcasting, either as a producer, reporter, or sports anchor. Intern will see how individual stories are researched, shot, written, and produced for TV sportscasts. Knowledge of the major sports is essential.
Documentary Production

This internship is designed for students interested in producing documentaries. The intern will assist writer/producer, photographer and editors in producing hour-long prime time documentaries for KIRO 7 Eyewitness News. Duties will include helping writer/producer research subjects, pre-interviewing people for interviews, scheduling shoots, scouting locations, and logging tapes. Will also assist the photographer on location shoots when possible . Should have basic knowledge of television production, basic computer skills, and ability to learn simple assignments quickly.
Creative Services
Monday-Friday
15-20 hrs per week between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
This internship is for students interested in Television Promotion and Creative Services. This encompasses writing and producing spots for news, programming, public service announcements and station sponsored events. The student will learn creative writing techniques in addition to the effective use of video and graphics for promotional spots. The intern will also observe producers during edit sessions to gain knowledge and an understanding of production techniques. Student will assist writer/producers with viewing tapes, logging video and gathering information in preparation for production. Student may also accompany producers in the field for creative shoots. Intern will also gain hands-on experience with on-air promotional scheduling.
