SEATTLE--Gary Colley of Port Angeles has been chosen as the 2009 Cox Conserves Hero for Western Washington. The accompanying $5,000 prize is being donated to the North Olympic Land Trust in his name.

An attorney, Colley has led local citizens to protect land through conservation easements. His donated legal work has been key in preserving more than 1500 acres of land since 1990. The land in Clallam County protects salmon and other wildlife habitat, farmland, sustainable commercial timberland, clean water and air, scenic vistas, open space and cultural heritage areas.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News anchor Steve Raible introduced Colley and award finalists at a ceremony hosted by KIRO 7 Family Connection partner One Eighty and its Edibility division. The other finalists included:
• Harry Case of Seattle, who purchased 176 acres on Whidbey Island in 1947 and has ensured it will remain forest forever
• Scott Hansen of Tacoma, who has led the way for the recovery of salmon into Puget Creek
• Cass Turnbull of Seattle, who has inspired thousands to join her in saving trees by proper planting and pruning
• Charlotte Valbert of Tacoma, who transformed an abandoned farm in the middle of the city into a public green space.

Cox Conserves Heroes is a KIRO 7 Family Connection program created through a partnership between KIRO 7’s parent company, Cox Enterprises, and The Trust for Public Land. The nationwide program, launched in Seattle in 2008, seeks to celebrate local conservation in communities across the country.
