Updated: 6:18 pm PST January 12, 2005
SEATTLE -- In response to the natural disaster in Southern Asia, KIRO-TV has teamed with World Concern, an international relief organization based in Seattle, and the American Red Cross Serving King and Kitsap Counties, to provide supplies to tsunami victims in the affected areas of Sri Lanka, Maldives, Indonesia, India and Thailand."In times of tragedy and need, our viewers step forward with incredible selflessness and generosity," said KIRO TV's vice president and general manager John Woodin. "We are proud to have a role in delivering money raised by this community to these outstanding organizations.
Monetary donations will be accepted at all Washington Mutual branch locations and will allow World Concern and the American Red Cross to purchase relief items for the region.
"Our goal is to collect 1.5 million dollars in cash," said World Concern's assistant director Lisa Evans. "A $100.00 donation would provide a family kit to include water purification tablets, bedding, cooking supplies, and food.
Joe Harbison, Asia director for World Concern, reports from Sri Lanka that "In swaths of coastal areas, up to two-and-a-half miles, long, it was utter devastation.""Our community is demonstrating an extraordinary level of support and generosity for the earthquake and tsunami victims of Southern Asia," said Larry Petry, CEO of American Red Cross Serving King and Kitsap Counties."The devastation is beyond comprehension and full-scale relief activities by the Red Cross societies in those nations will continue for a significant period of time. Our local Red Cross chapter will continue to support that effort and we encourage our community to also continue their support as well," Petry said.
