Hogan's Blog: Wednesday Morning Commute

Posted: 3:54 am PST February 4, 2009Updated: 8:26 am PST February 4, 2009

It's hump day!! Driving conditions were good on Wednesday morning. The roads looked dry and visibility was clear in most areas.

Have a question or want to tell us about your drive in? Just Ask Jenni!

Here are the things that may have slowed you down Wednesday morning:

Alert: WSDOT: A collision partially blocked the left lane of northbound I-5 at Capitol Boulevard. TIME: 7:25am UPDATE: Cleared from the road at 7:45am but back up remains to Trosper

Alert: "What is happening with the police blocking off 56th & South Tacoma Way?" - Millie. TIME: 7am Answer: I asked our assignment desk and they said that they heard it was an accident involving a police officer on 56th and Washington. Since it was a police officer that meant that an investigation had to be conducted so traffic delays probably lasted longer than a usual accident. I've been told there were only minor injuries. I hope this helps!

Alert: An accident on 167 was cleared to the shoulder just north of SR 18 but caused a distraction at 6:30am. The morning commute slowed northbound for more than an hour because of this.

Alert: We heard reports of a disabled vehicle on northbound SR 167 just south of SR 410 at 5:50am UPDATE: 6am All clear

Alert: An early accident on 167 northbound just south of 15th NW caused early back ups at 4:30am. UPDATE: It seems that the accident cleared around 5am as traffic was moving better.

Construction Alert: We now have a camera on SR 18 at Tiger Mountain Summit! YAY! We've been watching it all morning. It looked like traffic was alternating in the eastbound lanes only until just after 4:30am. The cones were then cleared to the shoulder which makes us think the commute is back to how it was yesterday morning. That's when we saw both lanes open westbound and one open eastbound. "One thing I noticed when I drove through is the signs about work ahead were past the last exits in both east and westbound directions so you have no choice but to go through good or bad, not good if bad!!!" - John (Thanks for the information John, I'll call WSDOT today and let them know about the sign placement and see if they could move it earlier, Jenni)

Fog Patrol: The KIRO 7 weather department is warning of patchy fog in some areas. We're keeping a close eye on the cameras in Tacoma, Sumner, Puyallup and Olympia.

Construction Alert: SR 9: 176th Street to Marsh Road. WSDOT crews will close the right lane of southbound SR 9 from Broadway Avenue to 152nd

Construction Alert: I-405 construction in Bellevue, Renton and Tukwila: Crews may close up to two lanes in each direction of I-405 between I-5 and SR 167, during the night and early morning hours, for construction work. Crews may also close the following ramps. The off-ramp from northbound I-5 to northbound I-405. The off-ramp from northbound I-405 to northbound SR 181 (West Valley Highway). The on-ramp to northbound I-405 from Tukwila Parkway.

Construction Alert: I-5 at 85th - WSDOT Crews will close the southbound I-5 on-ramp from N. 85th Street and up to two lanes of southbound I-5 near N. 85th Street in Seattle overnight for noise wall construction. Crews will open all lanes and the ramp by 5 a.m.

Construction Alert: WSDOT Crews will close the right lane in each direction of SR 526 from 40th Avenue W to Casino Road nightly for electrical work. The eastbound lane will be closed from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The westbound lane will be closed from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. WSDOT Alert: WSDOT will restrict flammable cargo in both directions of Interstate 90 from the Mount Baker Tunnel through the Mercer Island Lid beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 2. The restriction is expected to end by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11.

Sounder Alert: The Sounder is running on the normal schedule today. Check your schedule at this link.

Ferry Alert: We're are keeping a close eye on the ferry runs all morning. Check your schedule at this link.

Metro Transit Alert: Metro is running on a normal schedule. Check your schedule at this link.

Pierce Transit: All buses will run on a regular schedule. Check your schedule at this link.

Alert: WSDOT is temporarily reducing the speed limit on about 1.4 miles of State Route 9 near Snohomish between SR 96 and Marsh Road. The lower speed limit might remain in effect through April 15.

SR 169 - Right lane of northbound SR 169 closed from 140th Way SE to the Cedar River in Renton due to flood damage.

What are you asking?

"What does the restriction on the over head sign that says no flammable liquid in the I-90 tunnel mean?" - Robert

Answer: The restriction means that WSDOT has turned off the fire suppression system in the Mount Baker Tunnel and the Mercer Island Lid. They do this while the conduct routine maintenance tests. You'll wantt to go 405 instead to get accross the lake.

I wanted to quickly update you all on my plan to buy the phone number 867-5309 (Tommy Tutone's song "Jenny"). If you didn't read it in my blog a few days ago, I was all excited to bid on the phone number that is for sale on ebay and make it my traffic number here at KIRO. I have bad news... the bids are already past 400k, so no new phone number for the traffic department. Thanks for all of your e-mails encouraging me to purchase it.

Today is an important day for me. It's the anniversary of when I signed my letter of intent to join the crew team at UW. What a great decision that was. Go Huskies!!!

Cheers,
