What You Need To Know If You Get Into Collision

Every morning we show you how to get around crashes and stalls that snarl the morning commute. But do you know what to do if you are the one involved in a fender bender? We worked with Washington State Patrol to come up with a crash checklist:

1) Move out of traffic - If your car is drivable, move over to the nearest shoulder or off ramp.

2) Know when to dial 911- If there is more than $1000 damage, any injuries, or if you're not sure what to do.

3) Exchange the right information - Most people miss key things. Make sure you get the following:
- Name & number of the other driver
- Make, model, & license plate of their car
- Insurance name & policy number

4) Create a file - As soon as you drive away you'll forget details. Take photos with your phone and write down what happened. You can always do a civilian report after the accident occurs, for this you need to have the date, time, and location.

5) Know your rights - If the other driver or their insurance company calls you, you do not have to talk to them. You can simply direct them to your insurance company.

Here is a detailed list of some tips from a local attorney: Legal tips!

We hope you don't ever have to use this but just incase, print this out and keep it in your car.

This is quite a hot topic on Facebook and Twitter. Check out what people are saying at this link.
