Hogan's Hot Topic: Red Light Cameras

Red light cameras are popping up all around these days. The KIRO 7 traffic team gets a ton of emails with questions about red light cameras and the rules. Can I turn right on red? Can I hang over the intersection to turn left while the light is yellow? So we're heading to talk to the people who enforce the rules to get the answers for you. We'll share what we find Friday morning on KIRO 7 at 6am. Have a question you want us to answer or maybe a tip for others? Join in on this hot topic by leaving your comment below.

What you’re saying? Here are some of the responses on both Twitter and Facebook:

Twitter:

@jpmarth (Twitter) “The cameras will get you for an incomplete stop on a free right turn! Two coworkers got nailed on that one.”

@Snshngal1 (Twitter)”Yeah...what are the rules? I think people are way paranoid about them!”

@kplombardi (Twitter) “Charged 4 times - car I sold to a dealer 4-5 yrs ago. Difficult to deal w/ camera vendor. Data collection problems.”

@Rangerover_1999 (Twitter) “I got a ticket in Lynnwood, for turning right t red light. Surprise ticket in mail two weeks later..rubbish.”

@peerless1(Twitter)” I got caught when I thought I shouldn’t have and I think they make people drive bad because they are always braking so suddenly. Plus, I don’t know if it’s just me but the ones with cameras seem to have shorter yellow lights.”

@kats2009 (Twitter) “Take another route if possible.”

@ibdatsdotgrl(Twitter) “The camera that's in south park on Cloverdale takes pictures non-stop. Red light green light... :)”

@Mikeshoneybaby (Twitter) “My son, Light was green he turned right when it was changing to yellow. $124.00 ticket I had to pay cuz it was in my car!! That was in Puyallup! I can see it being 40-50dollars but 124.00 come on!”

@michellekrater (Twitter) "I haven't been caught but I see the flash on all those right turn on red peeps not stopping. Reminds me to fully stop each time.”

@gabosgab (Twitter) “Red light camera q: one has the right to face their accuser. How does that happen with a camera? Does it make it safer?”

Facebook:

Brian (Facebook) “Here's a tip for not getting caught: don't run the red light!”

Tonya (Facebook) “Red light cameras freak me out. If the light is yellow when i'm right at the line do i lock up my brakes to stop & avoid a ticket from the camera (& probably get rear-ended in the process) or do i go through the light? i'm paranoid.”

Marcus (Facebook) “Stop!=D”

Peter (Facebook) “No, I haven’t been caught by one, but here in Virginia Beach, VA we have several red light camera and I see them go off often during rush hour.”

Chris (Facebook) “There is a way to beat those tix in court 100% of the time.”

Tonya (Facebook) “Thanks Jenni. I guess my question is when is it "okay" to proceed through a yellow light? If I'm about a car's length from the stop line when it changes to yellow, I'll usually go through the light.”

Andre (Facebook) “Jenni for real though...Are they really that helpful? Or are they a waste of tax dollars?”

Cody (Facebook) “Supeona, the officer who wrote the ticket since an officer still has to write the ticket. If they don't show up, the case will be dismissed. I got a ticket when my cousin was driving my truck while I was still in the hospital. Alternately, there is a class action suit initiated by Rob Williamson against several cities for these cameras. I believe KIRO already ran a story on this, but viewers could still get added to the suit. www.williamslaw.com

Steve (Facebook) “The politician entity will alleged that they have been installed to promote public safety, when in fact they are purely a money-making scam, especially when the amber-time is shortened so that there are more violations.”

Geoff (Facebook) “We need some here in Bellevue. You have to wait for 5 or 6 cars to run the red light before you can go on a green light at some of the intersections.”

Robin (Facebook) “Yes, a couple days ago I was turning right at a green/yellow light after yielding and the stupid camera flashed at me. Not sure if I'm getting a ticket in the mail but I'm sure a police officer would not have given me a ticket but the camera doesn't have judgment...arghhh.”

John (Facebook) “Know where they are and avoid them.”

Eric (Facebook) “Robin, the officer who reviews the camera has the judgment. What do you guys think, there is this camera and it magically pops out a ticket each time it detects a violator ? No, there are officers in charge of managing those cameras. Read closely. Here is how YOU can beat the red light camera... You might want to write this one down... Ready? Do not blow a red light..... Simple as that.”

Dee (Facebook) “Like Eric said and more G rated quote from a great movie Liar Liar "stop breaking the law, jerk face!”

Jason (Facebook) “Just say it wasn't u driving.”

Keely(Facebook) “Ooh my gosh someone got caught w/ their mistress w/ those. They get good close up shots!!!”

Vinne (Facebook) “I always say if your gonna run a red light at a camera intersection try to have your butt cheeks against the window!”

Holden (Facebook) “Claim your car was stolen!”

Sean (Facebook) “As a daily motorcycle commuter, I'm a huge fan. As it is I don't actually go on a green until I'm sure the bozos have all actually stopped. At times 3 or more cars will go through after my light turns green.”

Melissa (Facebook)”We have red light cameras by our house. My tip is to wait until the light turns green!!”

Donald (Facebook) “I like seeing them Go off when the Intersection is empty, Like any Piece of Enforcement Equipment they are subject to challenge like Radar Guns needed to be Calibrated etc., Supena the Issuer and Proof of Proper Function.”

Matt (Facebook)” Yeah, what Donald said. Do they just randomly fire off a flash sometimes? I see the one by my house flash when no one is near the intersection. Is that a warning shot?”

Tomas (Facebook) “Don't forget to bring up how some states have outlawed red light cameras, because they've been sued because they violate the 6th Amendment, as those charged cannot face their accuser, the camera.”

Eric (Facebook) “Oh, let’s say you all take Donald's advice and take them to court and you end up losing. You will more likely to not only be responsible for the ticket but also a court administrative fee for contesting the ticket in the first place. Have fun with that.”

Jake (Facebook) “Every 10 miles per hour zone ur in the yellow light is one sec so a 30 mph zone it's a 3 sec. yellow and buy a reflective license plate frame lol can't get a pic of ur plate lol.”

Darlene (Facebook) “I have a friend who got caught just before they went into action in auburn. She just got a warning....but, just drive the speed limit and stop running the yellow lights and it will save lives :)”

Jim (Facebook) “Hey Jenni, how does the law state what determines a red light infraction? Is it entering the intersection after the yellow? Being in the intersection? Is it a state law or city ordinance? I'm wondering of the laws are consistent from city to city. “

Steve (Facebook) “Here's some tips to avoid getting caught. Obey the speed limit and don't run red lights. Sheesh. The cameras are there to promote safe driving, not to catch you. If you speed or run red lights, you should be caught.”

Jennifer (Facebook) “Hey Jenni, my question... the ticket is not considered a moving violation right?”

Deanna(Facebook) I think they're a great idea!

Chris (Facebook) THEY SUCK! We have them all over Phoenix and they create bigger issues as now people get scared of getting a ticket . act stupid / hesitate then creating all new issues and rear enders too.... UGH!”

Maurice (Facebook) “Are you advocating that people break the law? Avoid being caught? If you stop at the light, you won’t get the ticket.”

Jim (Facebook) “Cover your plates with one of those plastic covers they are a little bit grey. The camera has a hard time seeing them from the rear, also each photo is reviewed before they send out t ticket, so there is some thought on them.”

Rich (Facebook) “Red light cameras are another way for the government to tax you. Look at the astounding number of tickets that are now written each day. I have never seen so many officers writing tickets. Not just here but all over. I do a lot of traveling and I know where the officers set up. After a 10+ year hiatus from being issued a ticket, I got 2 in 2 months I am fighting both. As for red light cameras and school zone cameras, do the speed limit and you won’t get nailed. I have always worried about being rear ended. I check my mirror when I get caught at a rapidly turned yellow and make a decision to stop or go.”

Rich (Facebook) “Just a quick note, covering your plates will get you a citation as well. I saw speed enforcement cameras in action in Phoenix and nearly went blind from the bright flashes.”

Barry (Facebook) “It reeks of "1984". Under the guise of public safety Auburn is generating revenue by peppering Auburn Way with cams. My daughter has gotten 3 this year and she drives like an old lady. She makes the mistake of running the light rather than locking up the brakes and being hit from behind.”

Bryan (Facebook) “I would have them look at the amount of accidents caused both before and after the cameras were installed. I have to believe that more are occurring after installation since people slam on their brakes at the last second to avoid a ticket & then get rear ended.”

Malia (Facebook) “STOP WHEN THE LIGHT TURNS YELLOW AND DONT GO FASTER JUST TO GET THROUGH THE LIGHT WHEN YA THINK ITS ABOUT TO CHANGE TO YELLOW.”

William (Facebook) “Jenni; I have not been caught by one...Aileen has..but in "traffic school" a couple of weeks ago the Federal Way Police Officers said that they get between 2000 and 2500 tickets a month from a few cameras in Federal Way....they have 6 traffic cops who produce between 500 and 600 tickets....”
