Posted: 7:29 am PST February 20, 2007Updated: 12:17 pm PST February 20, 2007

Heavy snow has created an avalanche danger in the Cascades, and Department of Transportation crews stopped traffic Tuesday morning to do avalanche control work.

Traffic on Highway 2 over Stevens Pass was delayed or stopped for a time on Tuesday morning. At Snoqualmie Pass, crews closed Interstate 90 at 8:30 a.m. for avalanche control work. Crews reopened Snoqualmie and Stevens passes by 9:30 a.m.

Another 6 to 11 inches of snow is forecast Tuesday in the Cascades.

In the lowlands, the storm brought rain and windy conditions. Showers and breezy weather is forecast for Tuesday, including some ice pellet showers and possible thunder, said KIRO 7 Meteorologist Rick VanCise.

"The wild winter weather settles down just a little today with morning rain easing to afternoon showers," he said.

Forecasters also are expecting plenty of snow in Eastern Washington -- in the northeast mountains and Blue Mountains. And, high winds are forecast this morning in Garfield and Asotin counties, the Palouse and Spokane areas.

Weather to Expect:
It is a pea soup kind of morning with dense fog and low clouds around Puget Sound. The fog will lift for the afternoon and we will see some more sunshine later today. High temperatures are running in the upper 40s and low 50s this afternoon.

Soak up the sun and dry weather today, because this will be changing for the rest of the week. Wednesday will be our transition day as we move back into a much wetter weather pattern. We will keep it dry for the commute tomorrow morning, but rain will be on the increase during the afternooon and evening. Rain continues Thursday and Friday with wind picking up at times. The wet pattern holds through the upcoming weekend with increasing rain on Saturday and showers on Sunday. High temperatures will be holding in the mid to low 50s through the rest of the week.
