Floods Force Thousands From Homes; Dozens Rescued

SEATTLE -- Flooding has forced thousands from their homes across Western Washington and it will be days before floodwaters recede, roads reopen and everyone who evacuated can return home.Here are the latest developments: Stevens Pass has reopened. Snoqualmie and White passes remain closed. I-5 remains closed at Chehalis. Washington Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond says the I-5 could be closed for four days. See video Here is the complete list from WSDOT of state roads that are closed. A King County helicopter rescues a man with a medical problem from his Fall City home. Chopper 7 video shows the helicopter crew taking the man out of the home in a stokes litter basket and into the helicopter as floodwaters rush around the home. VIDEO: Hundreds Still Stranded In Snoqualmie Valley The town of Concrete is advising residents of 50 to 75 homes in Concrete to evacuate due to geological conditions and the danger of slides. Rescuers using hovercraft rescue people and dogs stranded in Silvana, along the Stillaguamish River downstream from Arlington. See video SLIDESHOW: North Sound Looking More Like Puget Sound Reporter Jeff Dubois sees an "enormous sinkhole" on state Route 203, about 3/4 mile east of downtown Fall City. He says the sinkhole will keep officials from reopening the road after floodwaters recede. Wednesday, state emergency officials said voluntary evacuations were recommended for Snoqualmie. Dubois said flooded roads cut off access to the town. VIDEO: River Running Through Homes, Yards, Fields In Fall City, the rushing Snoqualmie River is flowing up to the front doors of homes, sweeping away cars and knocking down power poles. See videoVIDEO: Snohomish Residents Help Each Other During Floods Record flooding is expected on the Snohomish River at Snohomish, the weather service says, cresting at 10 pm. Thursday more than 10 feet above flood stage covering highways 2 and 9. The King County Flood Warning Center has issued a Phase III flood alert level for the White River. The river is expected to remain at high flood levels for the next several days. The neighboring Green River remains at a Phase II flood alert level, but is expected to jump up to a Phase III flood alert level later Thursday. More than 30,000 people have been advised to leave their flood-endangered homes as snowmelt and rain swelled rivers and caused mudslides and avalanches that engulfed neighborhoods and roadways. The state Emergency Management Division says it is supporting 29 emergency operation centers for counties, cities and tribes. The flooding response is covered by the governor's Dec. 24 storm emergency proclamation. Flood warnings are in effect Thursday for 14 counties in Western Washington and seven in Eastern Washington. The National Weather Service issued flood warnings for about two dozen rivers in Western Washington. They say rain-soaked hillsides are at a high risk for landslides. A large slide of mud and trees at least 50 feet wide and 3 feet deep destroyed a carport at a triplex on the lower part of Queen Anne hill in Seattle's Interbay neighborhood early Thursday. Engineers are assessing the damage and said the area is unstable. See video King County has issued a Phase IV flood alert for the Cedar River, where a water release by Seattle Public Utilities from Chester Morse Dam is expected to keep stream flows dramatically elevated into Thursday evening. A record 2.29 inches of rain fell Wednesday at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and a record 4.82 inches fell at Olympia. In the mountains, rainfall totals for the 24 hours ending at 11 p.m. Wednesday included 6.86 inches at Marblemount in the Cascade foothills east of Mount Vernon; 5.85 inches at Glacier, near Mount Baker; and 6.3 inches at Snoqualmie Pass. Rescuers pulled someone to safety after a car became trapped by floodwaters near Shelton early Thursday. The rescue -- shown live on KIRO 7 Eyewitness News at 6:30 a.m. -- happened on East Snowy Owl Road, just off Highway 101 about 4 miles north of Shelton. See video Pierce County police, fire and rescue teams are working with the Washington National Guard going door-to-door to determine how many people may be trapped in their homes. If necessary, they say they're ready to use a National Guard 6-wheeled truck, a Humvee or boats to evacuate the residents to safety. Pierce Transit buses are on standby to transport victims to safe locations. An avalanche of snow and mud as wide as a football field damaged some weekend recreation homes in the Hyak area east of Snoqualmie Pass. All homes at Hyak and condominium complexes at the base of the ski area were evacuated. Amtrak says there will be no train service between Seattle and Portland through Saturday. In addition to Red Cross shelters for people who fled flood waters, some shelters are available for livestock moved out of high water. The state Emergency Management Division says there are livestock shelters at the Puyallup Fairgrounds, the Evergreen Fairgrounds in Monroe and the Thurston County Fairgrounds. Fire trucks rolled through Orting, about 10 miles southeast of Tacoma, with loudspeakers Wednesday, advising everyone to leave the town and surrounding valley, home to about 26,000 people. Sandbags were placed around many downtown homes and businesses as the Puyallup River neared record levels.
