SEATTLE -- Repairs and maintenance to some Washington state ferries will cut service on the Vashon Island run, according to officials with Washington State Ferries. The Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route will be on a two-boat schedule -- down from the usual three boats -- beginning Monday because a ferry is going into drydock for mandatory maintenance. On the Bremerton route, a smaller boat will replace the 124-car Kitsap that normally operates on that line, reducing capacity between Bremerton and Seattle.Officials are adding extra passenger-only service to Vashon Island during the two-boat schedule, which is expected to last until mid-February.Get details on schedule changes at the Washington State Ferries Web site.Meanwhile, Washington state ferry officials said they are having a hard time finding enough dry dock space for eight vessels that need maintenance and repairs within the next three months, a legislative panel has been told. Get the complete story. The problems began when four 80-year-old Steel-Electric ferries were retired in November because of hull cracks and corrosion. The Coast Guard told the ferry system that its 14 remaining oldest boats needed to be inspected. The inspections were made in late December.
