With the exit of a cold front that gave a few showers during the day Sunday, high pressure is once again re-establishing itself over the area. This subsiding motion in the atmosphere will allow for still winds and rapidly cooling temperatures overnight and through the Monday morning commute.
Dense fog is likely in many areas, and a few locations could see some frost on windshields and car hoods as temperatures approach freezing by dawn. Widespread freezing fog causing icy roads isn't expected.
Low temperatures will range from the lower 30s in protected valleys and low spots in the interior away from Puget Sound to the mid 30s nearer the water.
Fog will take time to dissipate through the morning hours as the start of Winter on Wednesday means very low sun angles and not much warming. Still, some sun breaks are possible in the afternoon. Highs will be in the middle 40s.
Mountain locations will see mostly cloudy skies and the possibility for a bit of drizzle early on in the day. Freezing levels will range from 4,000 to 5,000 feet with highs in the 30s at the passes. No travel problems are expected there on Monday.
Clouds will overspread the region by evening as another weak disturbance moves into the Northwest. The most energy from this system will be across British Columbia, but a few showers are likely around the area on Tuesday. An Olympic Mountain rain shadow may keep rainfall in the central Sound, including Seattle to a minimum. Highs will stay in the 40s with lows in the 30s.
For Wednesday and Thursday, expect mainly dry and seasonable conditions with morning fog and afternoon chances to see some sunshine. A few showers will work across the north and coast on Thursday afternoon before another chance of light rain area-wide on Friday.
The Christmas holiday weekend looks similar to the upcoming week with morning fog, afternoon sunbreaks and a slight chance of showers. The best rain chances now appears to be late on Christmas Day.
There appears to be no significant chance of lowland snow leading up to the holiday, and a lack of major mountain snow should keep weather-related travel problems across the state to a minimum for the holiday... except for the morning fog.
