Amazing photos of avalanche debris near Mount Rainier

Comet Falls Trail Closed

A comparison of the Comet Falls Trail in Mount Rainier National Park from last July to this week.

With so many winter avalanches, as well as late-season snow, plenty of snow dangers remain for hikers in high elevations.

One such area is along the Comet Falls Trail in Mount Rainier National Park.

They sent KIRO 7 this split photograph with the scene of Comet Falls along the trail from last July on the left, and from Monday at right.

Obviously a fall through this incredible amount of snow could be fatal, as the NPS mentions in their release.

"Visitors to Mount Rainier National Park are advised that a new closure is in effect on the Comet Falls Trail from approximately ¼ mile below Comet Falls to the River crossing above Comet Falls in Van Trump Park.  This closure is due to an abundant amount of avalanche debris in the Van Trump drainage, making the trail impassable and creating extremely hazardous river crossings.  A fall through hidden pockets in the snow could be fatal." - Mount Rainier National Park news release.
