Saturday the sunniest day of Memorial Day weekend

By Morgan Palmer

A weak ridge of high pressure will keep the area mainly sunny and warm today with highs around Seattle in the lower 70s.  We do not expect a repeat of Friday’s lowland thunderstorm activity as the mean steering flow aloft is northerly.  Showers will form with isolated thunderstorms over the Cascades this afternoon and drift southward.  The high cloud tops could be a quite striking visual in the eastern sky as seen from the lowlands later today.

These mountain cells will have the potential for some hail, gusty winds and lightning before dwindling this evening.

By evening, an onshore push will have commenced at the coast, bringing cooler temperatures into the region for Sunday.   All locations have a chance of showers Sunday, but the best rain chances will be at the coast.  Highs will be kept to the lower 60s under partly to mostly cloudy skies.

Memorial Day looks mostly cloudy with only scattered sunbreaks, cool and showery at times.  The rain, however, will be light where it falls and hopefully not disrupt outdoor ceremonies.    Afternoon highs will only be able to get to around 60.

Showers and sunbreaks are forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday with temperatures returning to near normal.
