Smith Leads Shock To Third WNBA Title

POSTED: 5:35 pm PDT October 5, 2008

(Sports Network) - Katie Smith had 18 points and six rebounds as the Detroit Shock completed a three-game sweep to win the WNBA championship with a 76-60 win over the San Antonio Silver Stars.

Taj McWilliams-Franklin had 13 points and eight rebounds while Deanna Nolan added 12 points and five assists for the Shock, who won their third title overall as the team also won the championship in 2003 and 2006.

"I think the best part about the Detroit Shock is that we care about each other," said Detroit coach Bill Laimbeer. "But we played hard-nosed basketball and we always come to win. We have a great coaching staff, but we also have the best players in the world."

Smith was named the Most Valuable Player of the finals.

"We didn't want to take anything for granted," said Smith. "We came out to play it like it was a Game 5. We got it done today and I want to thank the fans. It's a matter of who wants it more and tonight we did."

Ann Wauters had 19 points and nine rebounds while Sophia Young donated 15 points for the Silver Stars, who were making their first appearance in the WNBA Finals.

"Even though right now it's very disappointing, but if we can look maybe a little bit back on our season, we had a wonderful season," said Wauters. "You know, it is pretty tough right now to lose those Finals, especially if you come that far, of course, you want to go there and win it all. But I think we have a wonderful group, you know, wonderful teammates, great coaching staff. So there is a lot of future I think for the San Antonio Silver Stars."

Trailing by four points to start the second half, Detroit surged ahead in the third quarter.

A 9-1 run gave the team a two-point lead after McWilliams-Franklin was fouled as she made a layup and hit the free throw for a 41-39 lead. Back-to-back jumpers from Wauters helped San Antonio grab the lead back, but Nolan and Alexis Hornbuckle hit three-pointers and the Shock led, 49-45, heading into the fourth quarter.

After Young scored the first two points of the fourth to make it a two-point game, the Shock rolled off the next 13 points and held a 62-47 lead after Smith drained a three-pointer with a little over five minutes to play.

Wauters stopped the bleeding with a layup, and after a Smith jumper, Wauters made a three-point play with a layup and a foul shot, but the deficit proved to much to overcome.

The Silver Stars got the first six points of the game, but the Shock rallied later in the first quarter and used an 8-2 run and scored the final four points of the quarter to make it a 16-16 contest heading into the second.

The contest was tight through much of the second quarter, but San Antonio used a 12-4 run, including six points from Vickie Johnson, late in the frame to take a 34-30 lead into the half.
