Posted: :57 EDT September 23, 2003

Rebecca Lobo of the Connecticut Sun retired from the WNBA on Tuesday after battling through knee injuries during her seven years in the league.

The former University of Connecticut star played last season for the Sun after being acquired from the Houston Comets in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2003 college draft.

The 30-year-old Lobo averaged 2.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 11.9 minutes for the Sun, who fell in the Eastern Conference finals.

In 121 WNBA games, Lobo tallied 6.7 points and 4.1 boards per contest.

Lobo was one of the WNBA's original players and was assigned to the New York Liberty, along with Teresa Weatherspoon, in the league's first player allocations on January 22, 1997. Lobo spent the first five years of her career with New York before being dealt to the Comets in exchange for Houston's second-round selection (26th overall) in the 2002 WNBA Draft.

Lobo is revered in Connecticut after leading the 1995 Huskies to a perfect 35-0 record and their first national championship.
